These two types of traditional tattoo machines operate differently due to their internal mechanics.
Coil tattoo machines use a system of electromagnetic coils that move a metal bar. This bar is equipped with needles that penetrate the skin and deposit pigment into the dermis.
Coil machines allow for better needle penetration into the skin, making them ideal for creating lines or tattoos with particularly bold strokes that require deeper incisions.
In particular, Dormouse coil machines are characterized by CNC-machined iron frames, which are quite large and heavy to support the coils, hand-wound with high-quality copper wire, contact screws, and the metal bar onto which the needle is mounted.
Rotary tattoo machines, on the other hand, are powered by an electric motor that continuously and smoothly moves the needles.
They are easy to handle, require minimal maintenance, and are perfect for shading and filling work.
Dormouse rotary machines are characterized by smaller and lighter frames (usually made of aluminum), designed to support only the electric motor and the eccentric onto which the needle is mounted.
There is no one machine that is better than the other.
